Como los muertos estaban presentes, aunque invisibles, no se podía hablar mal de ellos, pues no se podían defender, pero poderes superiores podían vengarse de los detractores y maldicientes. Por eso el gran legislador ateniense, precursor de la democracia, Solón (638-558 a.C.) prohibió por ley hablar mal de los muertos. Los familiares de los muertos podían denunciar ante los jueces a quien hablara mal de los difuntos ( Demost. 20, 104; 40, 49. Plut. Sol. 21). Se atribuye a Quilón de Esparta (555 a.C.), uno de los Siete Sabios, el epigrama τὸν τετελευτηκότα μὴ κακολόγει (ton teteleutekóta me kakológei): No hables mal de los muertos ( Florilegio de Estobeo, 125, 15).Forma incorrecta para motu proprio. No se le debe anteponer una preposición. También es incorrecto * motu propio.
